Fill in base and exponent.

About this calculator

Enter a base and exponent to compute the result. Handles positive and negative exponents, zero exponent (x^0 = 1), and fractional exponents (roots). Very large results are shown in scientific notation. Does not support complex numbers.

How exponents work

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself: 2^3 = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. A negative exponent means take the reciprocal: 2^(−2) = 1/2^2 = 1/4. A fractional exponent represents a root: 8^(1/3) = ∛8 = 2. Zero exponent always gives 1 for any non-zero base. These rules are fundamental in algebra, science, and engineering.
