About this calculator

Enter a non-negative whole-number dividend and a positive whole-number divisor. The calculator works through the long-division algorithm digit by digit, showing how many times the divisor fits, the product subtracted, and the running remainder, then reports the final quotient and remainder.

How long division works

Long division breaks a big division into a sequence of small ones. Working left to right across the dividend's digits, you bring down one digit at a time onto a running value, ask how many whole times the divisor fits into it (that count is the next quotient digit), multiply the divisor by that count, subtract the product to get a remainder, and carry the remainder into the next digit. When every digit has been brought down, the accumulated quotient is the answer and whatever is left over is the remainder. You can always verify the result: quotient × divisor + remainder must equal the original dividend, and the remainder is always less than the divisor.
