Weather forecasters use line graphs to show temperature changes over 7-day periods, whilst shop managers analyse bar charts showing which of 15 products sell best each month. In GCSE Mathematics, students encounter frequency tables with 50+ data points and calculate pie chart angles using the formula (value ÷ total) × 360°. Electoral results use bar charts to compare vote counts across constituencies, and financial reports display company profits through line graphs spanning multiple years. These visual representations help decision-makers spot trends quickly — a skill essential for A-level Statistics, university courses, and careers in business, science, and economics.

Common mistakes

  • When creating pie charts, a common error is calculating 25 out of 100 as 25° instead of the correct 90° (25 ÷ 100 × 360° = 90°).
  • In frequency tables, totalling 6 + 7 + 4 + 2 + 4 + 1 incorrectly as 25 instead of 24 occurs when tallying is rushed.
  • Bar chart interpretation errors include stating that 3 volleyball players is 'twice as popular' as 4 basketball players when basketball actually has more participants.

What is the difference between a bar chart and a histogram?
Bar charts display discrete data with gaps between bars, showing categories like favourite pets or sports. Histograms show continuous data with no gaps, representing ranges like height intervals (150-160cm, 160-170cm). Bar chart bars can be reordered, whilst histogram bars follow numerical sequence.
How do you calculate pie chart angles?
Divide each value by the total, then multiply by 360°. For example, if 15 students chose football from 60 total students: 15 ÷ 60 × 360° = 90°. Check your work by ensuring all angles sum to 360°.
When should you use a line graph instead of a bar chart?
Line graphs show changes over time or continuous relationships, like temperature over 24 hours or plant growth over 8 weeks. Bar charts compare separate categories that don't follow time order, such as favourite subjects or transport methods used by pupils.
What does frequency mean in a frequency table?
Frequency shows how many times each value appears in the data set. If a dice shows 3 on seven different rolls, the frequency of 3 is 7. The total of all frequencies equals the number of data points collected.
How do you read data from a pictogram?
Each symbol represents a fixed number of items, shown in the key. If one book symbol equals 5 books and there are 3 symbols, that represents 15 books total. Half symbols represent half the key value.
